How did "J" become the official abbreviation for Business Class?

My earliest memories of "J" being used as the abbreviation for a class between Economy and First is when British Airways introduced Club Class in the late seventies (The printed timetables showed F-J-M to indicate that an aircraft had First, Club and Economy cabins).

So, what does J stand for?
