That's true. Because Melia markets to Europeans, it was 100% full when we were there. My point was that the Hyatts, Hiltons, Sheratons, etc., which market primarily to Americans and Australians, were at 18% to 25% occupancy during that time, according to several taxi drivers serving those hotels. All things considered, I prefer a full resort hotel to one that is 20% occupied.
I certainly hope that situation has improved. Bali is a beautiful place, and the people are as friendly (or more so) than any other place I can think of. Bali's drawbacks, in my eye, are its distance from much of the rest of the world, and the intense heat during much of the year.
