Hmmm... I completely understand the meaning of the OP's post in that he's looking for the best possible hotel for the lowest possible price. Nothing wrong with that at all. I'll echo a number of posts here in saying that KUL is a great spot, but probably not what one is looking for in a vacation.
The word "value" brought an interesting thought to mind, though. Although I'm all for getting the biggest possible bang for the buck (baht, rupiah, yen, or other) to me the true value in a luxury property is different. The Pen in BKK is a spectacular property, but the lower rates actually diminish the value proposition to me. When I've been there I found the lobby to be a zoo and somewhat unpleasant. My stay there wasn't anything tremendously special as I felt like just another guest. Contrast this to the PHT or the LMO HKG (or the original MO) where I've always been treated as a very special guest. Sure, these properties are close to 2X the cost of the Pen in BKK, but the added level of service is definitely worth it.
At the Pen I felt like I was paying a lot of money for what I got back in service. At the others I felt like I was getting more than what I paid for. Keep in mind that the rate at the Pen was significantly lower than the others.
To me it's all about finding a balance. I doubt that I'll ever stay at the Pen in the future (and am instead heading to the FS for my next trip), but I will ALWAYS stay at the PHT.
