The state of the Canadian wireless market is really sad compared to the vibrant competition in the US. The CRTC needs to take the lid of the thing and let T-Mo or Cingular come in and take Rogers down a few pegs.
Firstly, the reason Microcell doesn't exist any more is the items you describe above. They were on their way to bankruptcy.

Second, in the US, the major carriers are:

Verizon
Cingular
T-Mobile
Sprint Nextel

...exactly one more than in Canada.
