I don't want to check it as I'm afraid it will get damaged. I have 4 connections and don't want it to get tossed around.

I wanted to see if there is any way I could take it with me on board?

My daughter has done this with me on more than one occasion. If the plane is not packed, and you have checked the rest of your luggage, they generally will let you. At the worst, they may have to check it at the gate. I don't think they would make you go back to the counter to check it, particularly since you have checked baggage already and they would have to unload it to board you!
