I would not be surprised if there were substantial numbers of Americans who would equate the Arabic writing with "Shouting fire in a crowded theatre."

I agree. Nearly two million people fly every day - if 5% or 10% of them expressed some lawful, civil displeasure at the whole charade, it might begin to sink in and counterbalance the message their leaders have been feeding them (which probably sound like "Americans appreciate the sacrifice you do each day at the checkpoint on the front lines of the War on Terror - You're keeping America's skies safe from terrorists").
Strength in numbers. If
MKEbound is the only one to speak up at a checkpoint, it's natural that those longing to make a big catch (or at least engage in a "big beatdown") will focus on those displaying noncompliant behavior.
That's gotta change.
