Stowe is lovely in the fall. I don't recall exactly the time from Boston, but I don't think it's six hours. Another option is the Berkshires. If I remember correctly that drive is about two hours each way. If I had to choose between the two, I would drive to the Berkshires. Both have fine restaurants and antiques.
