Not sure how they can expect you to overnight in MSP at your own cost since the cancellation is due to crew scheduling.
But I agree with the others, this is NW's problem, so make them put you on another airline. And don't forget, if they won't do it for you, hang up and call back until you get someone who will put you on the other flight.
--Well, I just did a check and I guess only AA/NW fly in LSE now, and AA's 2:50pm from PHX misses the LSE connection by 5 minutes, so you'd be forced to take a noon flight on AA.--
I'd force the rental car issue with them if you need to get there Friday night and since there is no early AM flight on Saturday.
