oneworld lounge access rules

Today I was granted lounge access to the Qantas club in Sydney's terminal 3 (domestic), flying SYD-PER in J the middle of a DONE4. I asked if the boarding card made me eligible to get in and was told it didn't (as expected); then I asked them to check my BA status (I've got a blue card but have attained silver while travelling). A few taps and presumably the whole PNR came up, because I was then told that my itinerary was enough to let me in, despite not being in transit at either end of this particular flight.

Is that right, or was I just lucky? I thought it was only status and the immediate flight that had any bearing. Not that I'm complaining
