Preparing for the worst: relatively tight connections with only one flight per day
Ok, so on Friday I'm flying from BOS-MZT. Due to the insanity of Delta's rescheduling (53 minutes in Guadalajara to get through customs AND switch flights? PLEASE!) which still happens to be an option online, actually (it used to be a 2 hour connection, 8 months ago when I bought the ticket), I've got a set of flights through ATL and MTY to get to MZT. Unfortunately, the only two ways to get me there on Delta that day are that impossible GDL flight and the one I'm currently on, or a switch to Mexicana in ATL that would get me in at 10:50PM, which is unacceptable.
Anyway, the thing that will throw everything off is the BOS-ATL leg, which from what I can tell is sometimes delayed on this end. If it is, I'm kinda screwed - unless...
There's a Continental flight that goes BOS-IAH-SJD-MZT and gets in at 4:15 or so (20 minutes after the Delta). If I see there's a delay about to happen, can I get Delta to switch me to the Continental itinerary? The contract of carriage says they have to get me there within a certain amount of time or they have to start giving me stuff, right? So if they can avoid that by putting me on a different itinerary, wouldn't that be preferable?
