In a conversation with a 777 pilot on one of my trans-atlantic trips he told me that just about all of the time they use satelite communications/data link while over the Atlantic. These are not broadcast on Ch 9 as one person mentioned, there is no dialogue. Satelite radio/phone can be used to talk to someone if needed.

I've actually never managed to stay awake for the hand-off.
