Actually, you CAN transfer the *W points to AE. I think that you need to call the 1-800 number though (or at least you used to...)
You may well be right. I know there was some debate in the past on this (because of exclusivity with CIBC and Amex credit cards), but I have never tried transfer to AE myself, and I am not up to date on the issue.
