Lots of airlines have maintenance ops that are run strictly separately from the airline, and do most of their business with direct competitors of the parent organization. I suppose it makes for an economy of scale and efficient use of resources which nets to a benefit for the airline; it sure does open the door to some subtle conflicts of interest, though.
