You do not have to register it. You will not loose the balance. You can open an account on line and see your balance (as other stated.,.. you need to use an UK post code). If you open an account on line, you can top up the card on line. You have to register it only if you want unlimited services on line. As a tourist, there is no real reason why to register it. That said, if you loose the card and are not registered... you lost it. If the card was registered... you get a replacement with the funds that were on the card....
It seems that they are no longer charging a deposit.
