I think it is 20k miles to upgrade one way ( ie 40k return( I could be wrong on this).
As to your second question, as KLM only has Economy and World Business Class (WBC) you will only be able to upgrade to WBC as there is no first class.
The SFO-AMS route was served in Dec/Jan 6th 2004 by an MD11.
My dad ( Plat) had reasonable scuccess in securing 3 award tickets AMS-LAX in September ( we had to pay cash EDI-AMS) although some dates were completely sold out.
