I stand corrected. I have just cancelled a reservation made with one of those $250 Japan Expedia coupons. They didn't charge a cancellation fee, and refunded the total out-of-pocket cost for me.
In addition (and this is where it gets good), they dropped a $200 coupon in my account good for ANY ESR hotel. So, any of you with Japan hotels booked using the $250 coupon, try to cancel it and ask for the coupon back. I suppose most Expedia agents don't check that it was special coupon valid only for Japanese hotels, so they just give you a generic coupon instead.
