For me it depends on several factors. If I know the flight back is likely to be the same a/c, and know there is a good chance I can take a later flight if misconnect (either through flexible ticket or playing the status card or airline allows same day standby) then I don't mind having short time between last arrival and first departure on separate tickets.
Learned a risk with turnarounds, doing some DTW-MCOs. There's some shedules where there are two flights leaving within 20 minutes of each other MCO-DTW, but only one of them is the turnaround (believe the other is a return for another hub). Be sure to get the true aircraft turnaround... you absolutely cannot miss that segment... it's the same aircraft!
