I recently booked a business class ticket and the booking code was "J". I called to upgrade to first class using eVIPs and was told that it was really an "I" fare ticket. Nothing on aa.com ever showed me anything about "I" class. The agent said that she could also clearly see the "J" booking code in my record, but the fare was still and "I" fare. I sent an e-mail and customer service responded admitting to an internal error in the booking system that was generating incorrect booking codes for my particular routing. They took care of my situation by authorizing the use of the eVIPs and promised to investigate the error.
