I do know from the Hickam side, that surfers would walk along the Ewa side of the runway to get to a surfing spot but I believe that they are not allowed anymore. I wouldnt mind checking out this hike. I used to spend my lunch hours on the Hickam side of the main runway and watch the jets come and go. This too has been blocked off because of security measures.
If you do manage to get around to it, please do. I'd love to hear if this is possible, or even safe (that is, without ear plugs).
In my spare time, I'm a big fan of parking my car at the lot out by the end of Lagoon Drive and watching the heavys take off. I think this hike would be a very interesting trip.
If you stay within the fenced area, you're not theoretically trespassing... right?
Update: Due to the 9/11 terrorist attack, Lagoon Drive is now restricted access which is controlled by the State of Hawaii Sheriff. Now, only authorized employees, business customers, aircraft owners/operators based at the hangars, or those with permission are allowed entry.
Of course, this is no longer true...
