We flew LAX NRT Beijing, rtn Shanghai NRT LAX last month in J/Seasons class on flts 47 and 48 and very much enjoyed the flights. While not quite up to Singapore Airl it was very nice with seats that went somewhere near sort of flat but which were a litte short for my well over six feet.

The Japanese food was excellent and very interesting. Some like nothing I ever had before. Try the grilled ell which is apparently a famous Japanese specialty (and yummy). On the flight back, my friend was putting soy sauce on some of the food and was very politely told by the Japanese guy next to her: "So sorry, not correct to put soy sauce on that--only on fish sushi." They had a nice chat and he tried to tell her what she was eating.

Lounges in NRT and Shanghai were fine. Loved the automated beer pouring machine. And the automated capucinno maker.

Service was okay on board. I asked for an Economist Magazine and one actually was brought a few minutes later. Guy near us (German, not Jappanese) made a big stink about not getting his meal choice (J was full) on the Shanghia NRT flight. The service supervisor came to him and bowed, went down on her knees and appoligized deeply. Just glad they don't have hari kari for stews! The German was eventually molified with a series of snacks I suspect came from First Class.

Was not impressed with the inflight entertainment options, a few films. But, I prefer to try and sleep trans Pacific.

All and all I would do it again. Especially since JAL flew us on AA award tickets which we got on just a week or sos advance notice. Apparently JAL has very good availability for AA awards. ^
