On many quality airlines just ask your travel agent to do it for you. Within a day or so you'll have confirmation back - particularly useful when just one segment of an itin is not showing the sub class (D/Z/W/V/Q/whatever) but the others are.
Generally, you can waitlist for D and A, maybe Z. You can use this to look for cheaper international fares or waitlist for required RTW classes.
You cannot generally waitlist for the cheap coach fares on UA. You can usually waitlist for coach fare classes that are sold without an advance purchase requirement (Y B etc.). You can reprice into a cheap coach fare class if it shows up, but you can't waitlist for it.
