Actually Congress and Senators do track emails, letters and calls....if they get 1000 calls and 90% are on the same side they will re-consider their position. The problem here is that most of the traveling public is willing to put up with these inconveniences because they fly so infrequently. So they are not getting 1000s of daily calls, more like a handful.
I personally think creative protests which get media attention are far more effective. They don't require a lot of people, but they do require some creativity and a story hook...and with some luck a slow news day.
Unfortuately TSA seems to be winning the current media battle. Plenty of stories in USA Today, NYT, television etc which spout the party line. It will take some real effort if we want to tell our side of the story. Maybe we should have a day when everyone brings toothpaste thru the metal detectors and then writes a nice message in every airport lav. But I doubt you could find enough people to risk fine or imprisonment for this cause.
