My gut read on this is that if you have status (Plat or EXP) with AA, stay unassigned and let them try to accomodate you. If you take the middle seat, you are pretty much guaranteed that's where you'll ride.
Also, keep an eye on the seat maps as you pass the 100, 72-hour windows. As elites get upgraded, aisle/exit seats may open up.
