Fortunately, out here on the west coast, we have WN for some of the AE routes (SJC-SAN, SJC-LAX, SJC-LAS, SJC-PHX...). One can say what they will about WN, but I've found it far more reliable and pleasant than AE- seats I want, and considerably more comfortable, little snacks if I didn't get a chance to eat something, better on-time performance, more flights. I do feel the OP's pain...or at least I used to . (Although I still have to take the RJ to LAX for connecting service...and it's not too bad)
