In November of last year I made a roomette reservation through AGR for the City of New Orleans and the Empire Builder in June. I made the reservation that early because according the Amtrak website I couldn’t travel on the day that I wanted to even booking that far in advance so I figured I had better make a reservation right away. I did not have AGR mail the tickets as I knew I would get enough points to get a bedroom before we left and wanted to try for that. In late February I got a call from AGR and they told me that I would have to get the tickets within a few days or the reservation would be cancelled. I asked why and she told me that there had been a change in AGR policy and any reservations over 30 days in advance had to be ticketed right away. So I told her to mail the tickets. A few days later, after my MBNA accounted posted to AGR, I now had enough points to upgrade from a roomette to a bedroom. I called and explained the situation to the agent and he made a new reservation for a bedroom which he held until I could return the tickets to AGR. I mailed them immediately and within a few days the AGR site showed my new reservation had been charged and I got the tickets a few days later. I was a little nervous that I might loose the roomette, not be able to get the bedroom, and then find all of the roomettes were booked too. But everything went smoothly.
I did somewhat the same thing later (it’s a long story too) and got the last bedroom on the California Zephyr in late July. I have always had excellent service from AGR and hope this continues.
