For what I'm interested in, NZ, the UA award is pricier than the *A award...

UA Awards - Saver or Standard - are for travel on United Airlines flights. Star Alliance awards are for travel on the star alliance: For example, in your case flying to NZ, a star alliance award would have you on Air New Zealand.
