On more than one occassion, even while I was still a US CP I looked at the lines for check in and security at DCA and walked out and got a cab to Union Station getting me back to NY as earlier or even earlier than I would have made it flying. I can't comment on LGA-DCA, but on LGA-BOS I believe the shuttle beats the Acela by 90 minutes door-to-door on average.
I agree with those who recommend US versus DL on the shuttle. One other factor that I like about the US shuttle is that they board and close the door early -- often up to 10 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time -- whereas DL makes it a point of keeping the door open as long as possible for stragglers. As someone who is rarely running to catch a flight, I prefer being closed up and on my way early on US, rather than waiting for latecomers on DL. Obviously, if you're the type who likes to cut it close, you may prefer DL.
