Sounds to me like you are due some money, but it all depends on what your contract states. Time to read the fine print!

Also, as has been previously noted (subtly), don't pay for things like this with a debit card. Use a card that has travel protection of some sort.

Also, did you purchase travel insurance? For such a grand trip with so much in someone else's hands, it was a must in my book. Maybe the TA included it?
