I did notice the same problem with my flights in July and August. I would always, get the confirm number but would not be updated on the flight status. Flew between YOW-YYZ twice this week and flight notification did work - so I guess that they have fixed it.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of an automatic registration procedure, so yes, you need to manually register for each flight and cannot register for a flight more than 30 days in advance
