As a family of 5 (3kids 7,7 and 4) run into the maximum occupancy issue often. Truth is it depends on how comfortable you want to be. Often times, I book a room with Max occ of 4 (2dbls) and use the couch as a bed for the little one. As long as you are comfortable with the config of the room (max occ 2 sounds like 1 King) go for it. Just don't expect the hotel to help with a rollaway for the child as they will likely tell you "No room" or "Fire code" prevents it.
