ADK is pretty darned remote. It's on the doorstep of Siberia, and there are only flights twice a week (if the weather doesn't cancel them). It's also the most expensive place in the world I've ever visited. Be prepared for this and use your entire luggage allowance plus your carry-on bag for food and supplies (example prices: $17 for a small frozen pizza, $8.49 for 1/2 gallon of milk, $5 a dozen for eggs). Nonetheless, go! It's a unique experience.

Here is some information about practicalities on Adak. I posted this information to Wikipedia after I got back 9/3, but some jerk named Jarfingle deleted it, presumably because he/she/it opposes advertising. In a place where there is one rental car outfit, one general store, and one place to rent rooms in town, I think this is overkill, but hey--I am not a rarefied elitist Wikipedian.

Housing: There are no hotels or motels on Adak, but both houses in town and a cabin at Three Arm Bay are available for rent. Call Dona (pronounced Donna with one N) at the Adak Housing Office on (907) 592-4512 to make arrangements. Office hours are between 8:00AM and 3:30PM local time. The cabins once maintained within the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge have fallen into disrepair and are unsafe to occupy.

Car rentals: Ms. Nelson used to rent cars, and her number still appears on a few Web sites for car rentals. However, she sold the business some time ago to Will, Chuck and Dave. You can reach Will (the mayor of Adak) at (907) 592-3865.

Liquor: Will also runs the liquor store, which is a well-stocked source of liquid entertainment. Beer is sold in cases and costs about $2 per can (or more, depending what brand you buy). The store is located in town in the unmarked building with the red roof behind the dumpsters. It's open when he's there. Enter through the door opposite the dumpsters or Will won't sell you anything.

Restaurants and Bars: Adak Sports Bar and Grill (aka ASBAG) open Thursday-Saturday from 6 p.m. until late, other days when many visitors are in town. This is the former Chief's Club/VFW at the head end (west) of Sweeper Cove near the gas station. Offering Bar & Burgers. Times, days and availability subject to change without notice. Bake & Tackle is located in the high school cafeteria. They sell hot meals, box lunches, fresh coffee and groceries. Open 7 days, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The rest of the information I posted about Adak (e.g. the part that wasn't vandalized by Jarfingle) is contained in the "Tourism" section, available here on Wikipedia. My pictures are available here (note: if you're on Comcast change your DNS server to a non-Comcast DNS server or the link won't work).
