I stayed at a traditional inn in Tokyo a few years ago where it was very politely made clear that one must be out of the room at 9:30am and not return for several hours. I discovered that the cleaning of the room included two ladies going over the floor mats on their hands and knees picking out tiny pieces of lint and dirt.

But, I have never encountered any sucy restriction in a Western style Japanese hotel.
