I tried googling for an answer but had no luck. Maybe someone who is familiar with business hotels could help me.

I have visited Japan twice as a tourist and stayed in business hotels. On my last trip, there were a couple of nights when I stayed up too late because of the time zone difference, and I became very tired during the day and needed a nap. The desk clerk would not let me go up to my room because they cleaned the rooms from 10 to 4 and wanted everyone out during that period.

I know this is standard practice in hostels. But is it also customary at Japanese business hotels, or do some let you use the room as long it is not being cleaned at the moment?
