My first haircut in the US was the same. I mean, it's kinda scary, you've seen these military-type haircuts; what were they going to do to my beautiful European hippie hair? Of course -really bad judgment- I went to Great Clips or something like that, and the lady got out the machine and announced "two inches" -- I think I negotiated that down to one, but needless to say, it was a lot of hair, and I looked terrible. It took me 5 years, and many tears, to find a US hairdresser I trust.
Oddly, no such problems in E Europe, Asia, and C/S America. I'm usually too tall for the chair, but that's about it.
