Yes. About 1/2 of our friend's phone calls were from Ketchikan off the ship-mid point in the cruise and calls to dog sitter, work, etc. The ships are SUPPOSED to turn off the tower when in port. If you are close to the ship and the tower is on, you MAY be roaming onto the ship's tower and not the local towers. Very risky to use your cell close to the ship, IMHO. They are fighting hard with Verizon to get some of their money back.
