It's not just the mileage -- it's also the emissions. A 2006 A4 with automatic transmission emits over 9600 lbs of carbon annually (assuming 12000 miles). By contrast, Mrs. CO FF's Prius emits 2500 lbs of carbon (and the stats aren't out yet on my 2007 Camry Hybrid). Granted, your A4 is cooler. But I'd gladly pay extra to rent a duplicate of my Camry Hybrid than some smog-belching Mercury Grand Marquis.
