I wouldn't count on it being slow, of all afternoon/evenings, Friday will be the busiest! If you have to check bags, I would do some scouting around before committing to a checkin line. If you check in online, you have multiple options, like going to the bag drop. You can also see if they moved the elite checkin to some undisclosed location (as a previous poster noted), or use the skycap.
The delays are just different now - before it was security, now it's luggage checkin. The good news is that overhead space has been nearly empty, so no need to rush the gate to board anymore.
