HOB is a good venue, musically, but they don't call it the "house of rules" for nothing. Expect a pat down as you go in - leave your camera at home, and don't even think about sneaking in any illicit substances.

Directly across from the HOB is the best record store in the city - Louisiana Music Factory. Great selection of all kinds of local artists, and a ton of listening stations so you can find new favorites.

And good for you for wanting to volunteer. If H4H falls thru, consider Animal Rescue New Orleans. They gladly accept even single day volunteers, and you spend the day driving around the city filling up feeding stations set up for now-stray animals. You'll be helping a good cause, and get to see a lot of the devastation that visitors to the French Quarter would typically miss.
