How strange.
I rarely see my ticket before the day of departure, and haven't a clue beforehand what the ticket number is. Nevertheless, I've upgraded 12 flights in the past year.
Not once was I asked for a ticket number.
Edited to add that I always start by giving the help desk agent the relevant KLM PNR.
