Just thought I would update this thread with our experience at "Sails in the Desert" -- the second best hotel at Ayers Rock. The alleged best hotel is "Longitude 131." We also stayed in a spa suite, like the original poster.

Sails, and indeed everything at Ayers Rock Resort (the government condoned monopoly for all food, lodging, and fuel at Ayers Rock) was a huge ripoff, way worse than the ripoff at any other major natural site I have visited.

I would say decor and service at Sails was not at the level of an average Hyatt, as the original poster said, but more at, say, a Holiday Inn Select. The room was about 4 years overdue for remodeling.

Our Sails spa room cost AU$640 for a night, and a 1% credit card surcharge was added (this was not mentioned in any confirmations, apparently the monopoly supplier Voyages just decided they could get away with it). Based on this, and knowing Voyages runs it, I cannot imagine "Longitude 131" would be worth AU$1800 a night, which is what they are currently charging, in addition to imposing a 2 night minimum stay requirement.

As a guide, everything you enounter at Ayers Rock -- and I mean EVERYTHING: lodging, food, restaurants, car rentals, park admission, tours, etc -- is literally twice as expensive as it should be even considering the remote location, which is actually far less remote than many other places in Australia.

If you must visit Ayers Rock and the Olgas, accept that you will be ripped off each day far worse than you would be at Yosemite, the Canadian Rockies, Grand Canyon, or even the Galapagos for an attraction that -- while interesting -- is not of the same caliber as any of the others I mentioned. If it's a must-see to you, arrive at noon and leave a day later to minimize the pain. For most people that should be enough.
