I just flew this today. The new gates are in the "QF" part of the terminal and is about a 20 min walk. The reason for the change seems to be that QF & UA are sharing "special screening" facilities. Previously each carrier had their own "special" screening section.
If you are flying UA839/UA840 (LAX to/from MEL) it is not worth while going to RCC as the turn around times for these flights are normally 45-60mins.
