If it is a weekend or the hotel is not in downtown, you can dump the car onto the street.
We're staying at the St Regis Hotel, where I understand the car park will cost $50 - staying one night Jan 15th (a Monday). However, we will have 4 suitcases, 2 ski boot bags + two hand luggage bags, so managing on any sort of public transport is probably not an option. Yes I know this is a lot of luggage, but we're skiing, going on a cruise, seeing friends in LA and then driving up Highway 1 finishing in SF. From what you've all said, it sounds as if it might be cheaper to keep the car, therefore saving on the taxi fares, and pay out the valet parking costs.
