Generally cost difference for flying from say NYC to SYD is
about a couple of hundred dollars more compared to LAX to SYD.
Dont know if using the miles would save you a lot. Better off
getting a ticket from your original departure airport. This way
if there is a missed connection, the airline is responsible to connect you.
