Help me surf safely without laptop

Hi everyone, sorry I tried searching this but didn't find anything easily.

I have been traveling with my laptop but now it is broken. And anyway they are heavy and I don't always need one, so I'm thinking about not replacing it. But I am kind of paranoid about using Internet cafes and hotel business centers when I travel (I go all over the world).

Can anyone suggest a quick set of guidelines and tools I can use to make sure (pretty much) that none of my personal data gets stolen if I use someone else's computer away from home?

Right now, I'm thinking I'll just:
1. Check the keyboard line for a keylogger dongle (but unfortunately this isn't always possible), and

2. use Logmein to connect to my home computer, and do all my surfing and any other work from there, since it is supposedly encrypted, and

3. if I do have to type in a password for anything, use "On-Screen Keyboard" in the Accessories menu.

Any other easy advice? I am reasonably tech-savvy but not enough that I've ever, say, used Linux.
