I guess you'll have to get in the general check-in line." Now this shocked me even more. I said thank you, walked towards the general check-in area and was shocked again by the length of the line.
I travel a lot on "off days" (Saturdays, late night, etc.) and I have seen the Elite check in area at EWR completely unstaffed about half a dozen times. At these times, there is no "stealth" Elite check in area.
On some of those ocassions, the electronic signs over the check in positions read something like "Closed please proceed to general check in area." Other times I just had to figure it out for myself.
CO may be a big company but it doesn't seem like a complicated thing to do to turn on the electronic signs once the final ticket agent has finished working in the Elite area.
