I had a Brazilian visa in my last passport with a year or validity remaining at the time the passport expired. When I explained the situation to the passport office, they kindly left the page with the visa attached valid, and punched holes through the rest.

I did one trip with two passports, although technically only latest one was valid. Since I had to do more explaining then it was worth in GRU, I bit the bullet and got a new visa in my new passport when I returned.
