Yes, I know this... but given that UA doesn't care if I've paid for W class or full Y when it offers me the $550 deal (often on flights which officially have no award upgrade space), I was wondering why they can't offer on-the-day upgrades for miles as well as cash

After all, they are hard earned miles, and supposedly they are as good as cash...
