Why no year on tickets/boarding passes?

I was just reviewing many of my old boarding passes, and I realized none of them have a year on them. They all have the two-letter date followed by a three-letter month abbreviation (i.e., 14NOV), but never a year.

It seems a little odd. I guess I just assumed that a year was necessary, but perhaps it isn't.
