The article actually states that the "crew" took the door off its hinges, so that gives no indication of inside or outside. But, logically, if the hinges could be taken off from the outside, having a lock is nearly pointless.
In any case, I'm not sure any lock stands up to the human factor where someone can be coerced into opening the door. It provides another common-sense level of security, but it isn't a fail-safe method of preventing highjackings.
