I may be about to bring the wrath of Khan's evil brother on me, but why is it worse to have people on a plane talking into a phone that talking to a colleague, wife, partner, child... etc who you are travelling with?

Provided one is talking at a respectful level into a phone I don't see the problem. FAs could announce that phones my be used but that people speaking too loudly might be asked to tone it down...
